You would expect that having a lot of sex would lead to more STDs. But for some reason, there are people who think that you can have a lot of sex with a lot of new partners every week and be clean as a fiddle. Four more syphilis cases have been found during an investigation of the porn industry. This brings the final tally to nine that they’ve found thus far.
Los Angeles County Health Officials are scared silly over the outbreak and concerned that there might be more cases out there. The five cases that were found last week led to a halt to all filming activities, at least for a little while.
“It’s not surprising in the adult film industry that we would have transmission of all sexually transmitted diseases because they’re having unprotected sex, oftentimes with multiple actors,” said Dr. Jonathan Fielding, director of the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health.
Dr. Fielding says that the number of syphilis cases is expected to continue growing. The last few cases were found after testing the sexual partners of those who’d been infected. All of those who’ve tested positive were part of the industry, but they do not know how much they’ve mixed with the general population.
The Free Speech Coalition asked for a moratorium of all filming in the porn industry this week and asked for all actors to get tested. They were also told to get penicillin shots before going back to work. The FSC says that people can get back to work 10 days after getting their shots.
Last year, 819 cases of syphilis were reported in LA County. The number of cases in the porn industry is low compared to the total, but he argues that the STD rates are higher in the industry than anywhere else. We wonder why.
In 2004, four performers tested positive for HIV.
