Live around happy people? Then prepare to be sad, or worse yet – suicidal.
According to the Harvard Business Review, Countries and U.S. states with happier people also have higher suicide rates:
For example, Utah is ranked number 1 in life satisfaction but has the ninth-highest suicide rate, whereas New York, ranked45th in satisfaction, has the lowest suicide rate in the U.S. Unhappy people may become suicidally distressed by others’ contentment, the researchers suggest.
In other words, if you’re unhappy and you live around people who are happy, then you’re worse off, and more likely to commit suicide. Misery prefers company.
