A Bronx teacher is accused of duct taping her student to a chair because he wouldn’t sit down.
Sixth grader Irel Jones said another student was asking him for answers during a test so he got up, but then instructed him to sit down, and then taped to his chair by his teacher.
Jones says his teacher then looked on as his fellow students made fun of him.
‘She duct-taped my arm, my other arm and my stomach together and then she wrapped it [the tape] around the chair twice,’ he told myFOXny.com,
‘When he was duct-taped, the students were taking his chair and pushing it around the classroom, and the teacher was grinning’ said the boy’s mother.
The Department of Education said the teacher is still employed within the New York City schools system while it conducts an investigation.

Why was his little behind out of his chair during a test?
Perhaps you should go back and re-read the article. He explains he stood to move his seat because someone kept asking him for answers.
Nancy, it clearly states WHY he was out of his seat. Another child was trying to cheat off of him and he stood up to move.
I read another account of this piece in a New York paper. As I
understand it, 1) the teacher is young and inexperienced 2) Irel,
the black student, has a history of behavioral issues unattended
3) There is a cultural difference between the teacher and Irel and
his Mom and the class 4) All these factors caused this teacher to
lose it and duct tape this continuously misbehaving child to a
chair 5) Irel’s disruptive behavior needs to be examined so that
his classmates and he can learn, and his teacher can do what she is trained to do: TEACH!!!
Hhmmm! not to justify the teacher’s behavior and or actions, but it is the parents responsibility to rear, train and discipline our children. As parent we are responsible of training our children to obey and respect those in authority over them. a lot of children come to school with behavior issues and the teacher’s seem to get a complete well taught lesson within the 45 min of time, 20 min of the time is trying to get the children to settle down in the classroom you have children talking, making paper toys, listening to music, texting and switching seats, sneaking out the classroom etc. who fault is this? ….Middle school students cant get past elementary academic level, High school students graduating (if they make it this far) with 6th grade academic level.
*teachers seem to can’t get much work done in the 45 mins time of the class while 20 mins is trying to get them to listen. smh majority of our children with such low academic studies is the parents fault. the teacher’s job is to teach and teach only.
For the record, when I was in elementary school some 20+ years ago, I remember a favorite teacher of mine taping my cousin to his chair. She taped him around his thighs tho, so he could still work he just couldn’t get up. My cousin was indeed a trouble maker and disrupted class often. My point is, back in my day, this wasn’t a big deal. hell when I went to school, we still had paddling in school.
Being a teacher myself, no doubt the teacher has probably had to tell him to stay in his seat often. And she just had enough of it!!! I’m not saying she should of tape him to his seat but these children to not behaved or listen to the teacher like they did back in my day(60′s) So maybe she needs to retire or get another job at another school. Where there’s more control over the children. And also no doubt this child parents have been told about his behavior. And during testing children are suppose to stay in their seat and no talking. what ever this other student had to say it could of wait until after school or lunch. And if was about the test that take alot nerve!!!!
That child was probably a constant distraction and the teacher had enough. March is the longest month in the school year with no days off. The teacher waited too late to take action. She should have contacted the parents and others back in September. It only takes a couple of days to realize the children who will cause problems in the near future. The teachers now a days can’t just teach. they have to have discipline, structure and complete control of the classroom from day one. Yes, they need to know how to deal with children with behavior problems otherwise the whole class and now he/she are having behavior problems. She took too long to deal with her lack of control. Anyway, I remember working at a private daycare, yes daycare and the head teacher tied a 4 year old in a high chair for the morning because she was fed up with the child and was trying to discipline him. So this stuff is happening. I hope people don’t make this into a black and white issue.
oh so this little angel who never gives the teacher a problem was just taped to his chair for no good reason….yeah right. He is lucky he goes to school these days where there is little control and discipline and frequently little learning by too many. I know well how MANY of OUR children behave in class. I am sure he has had his moments. It would be nice if our kids could go to school and learn without the constant interruptions from the few who wish to remain in the” I want to remain stupid club” We have lost control of the classrooms in many public schools and no one has a clue of what to do. So who suffers….our children do. But who really cares….someone has to fill all those fine jails in the future right!
The teacher obviously came prepared with duct tape to implement her own policy regarding misbehavior. She could have asked the student what the problem was before she jumped to conclusions.
He stated that he was being annoyed and distracted by another student so she should have addressed the other student about his behavior. What transpires next is the teacher’s immaturity and loss of control as she relates to the mocking and molesting students.
A teacher allowing assault of a student is totally bizarre.
The story makes sure to give a negative history of this young man however look at the socalled authority figures and the out of control students.
I’m a teacher so I fully understand a want to tape a child to his/her seat and definitely to tape mouths closed! I actually did try taping mouths closed my first year, but it wasnt duct tape. The students thought it was funny, and I was able to continue teaching after that.
lol. I think thats BS. These parents are frickin fools these days. This kid looks like a clown that would disrupt the rest of the class. Never in my life have i ever seen a kid get up bcus anothr kid is cheating off them. Parents ought to teach their kids at home if they cant get them to go to school and allow everyone to learn. Dont try to penalize the teacher for doing what it takes to manage the classroom with your bad a$$ son in there.
lol. I hope u didnt just make it into a black and white issue. haha. No offense intended. It’s all love
WHY IS IT THAT YOU LIKE SO MANY ARE SO FULL OF IT TO THE POINT YOU PEOPLE ARE DANGEROUS SO FULL OF HATE THAT YOU PEOPLE ARE GOING INSANE AND LIKE GEORGE ZIMMERNOTAMAN DOING AND SAYING INSANE THINGS
Never heard of duct taping students but did have paddles. Back in the day, disruptive childrern were sent to principal office or detained in a room, allowed to continue lesson. I think duct taping is a form of imprisonment, like handcuffing. I don’t feel that teacher had a right to do that. Back in the day, hitting someone elses’ child could backfire. A principal beat one of my friends with his ”leather strap” and the friends’ father came to school with a rifle. Detention or removal from the class with notification immediately to the parent would be the best option in any case where the child is disruptive with/ without causing physical harm to himself or anyone else. Making a laughing -stock out of the child is counter-productive to teaching that child right from wrong. Actually allowing other students to engage in negative behavior is as well conter-productive to the learning process. Solution: the teacher’s behavior in the incident should be examined thoroughly as well as the childs. The child has issues that a counselor can address. The teacher has issues that need to be addressed by the administrators of that particular school system.I think a suspension is due with out pay. Obviously the child didn’t get hurt phsically, we need to know mentally or psychologically is there a scar left from the incident. I know for a fact that back in the day there was a alot mental anguish distributed from all aspects of a child’s life that went unaddressed now it is addressed by all the legislation we have today concerning our children. They are our future – Handling them with care hurts no one.
The teacher can’t go reprimanded, but the problem is with the administration, not backing up their new teachers. Disruptive children are not held to account for their bad behavior, and that is a systemic problem. Inexperienced teachers don’t yet know how to manage disruptive children. The race of the teacher is less meaningful then the level of experience. There are cultural factors at play here, but teachers of different races can learn how to speak to problem children in authoritative way that leads the children to be less of a disruptive influence. Learning those lesson is either learned by growing up in a culture where dominance-submissive cues are naturally incorporated in the cultural communication systems, or you learn by watching more experienced teacher show them bad-ass boys you don’t take no shit!!! As any experienced teacher will tell you, learning to teach difficult children ain’t taught in any post-graduate courses, not the proper way.
Amen, Omar, the parents are the problem. They don’t know what to do with these kids, but these clueless parents keep doing the wrong things, like rewarding the kids with with cool clothes, toys, games, tv, in spite of their poor performance in school.
She was definitely wrong to duct tape him to the chair! But, he made a wrong decision also. If a student was cheating off his paper he could have raised his hand and made the teacher aware of it. If the teacher said not to get up then you don’t get up!
It is not a Black or White thing and people should stop acting like that is the problem. I am Black and a former teacher. I started young, right out of college. You get experience as you work the job and gain years under your belt. I have worked with white, black, arabic, mexican, puerto ricans, so I resent the fact that it might be some cultural differences. There are none. When I was 15, I went to many countries in the continent of Europe with my white, English teacher and 8 other whites along with 300 Canadians. I had a good time. We got along. I was respectful and that was my Sweet Sixteen Party trip. I was given the opportunity to have a Sweet Sixteen Party or go on the On To Europe Trip. I went on the trip. I could have a party anytime.
You could paddle students but I didn’t. I could not see touching another person’s child. I used time out before the expression was being used.
People in the community are going to lose teachers because of their comments.
I would like an outsider to come into the school, teach the kids, write the attendence in the book and put the information on the computer, write lesson plans, take the books home and read the lesson, grade report calls, call behavorial problems student’s parents, organize classroom. sweep classroom when the janitor does not, attend weekly teachers meeting, and other meetings and workshops, etc.
I do not condone touching students, deduct taping or whatever. I am quite sure the teacher used all the necessary tactics before deduct taping this young man.
The young man could have raised his hand for the teacher to approach him and explain the problem.
He also could have ignored his friend.
