Dwayne Flourney of New Jersey was arrested on Wednesday for murdering his 76 year old grandmother and 52 year old father, according to The Star Ledger. Flourney stabbed the grandmother to death and reportedly stuffed her into the trunk of a car, then waited for his father to get home, and murdered him in the same manner.
After murdering the two, Flourney allegedly hid the bodies and threw a party.
And black folk are in denial about needing to heal from the 400+ years of horror, from MAAFA to the new plantation, the penal institutions, coupled with systemic exclusion and oppression. These tragic events have created psychologically scarred, self loathing basketcases. All of the above stories speak to that reality — from the insane slaughtering of Ancestors, to stealing worthless Michael Jordan [who literally shows disdain for his black groupies] tennis shoes, to begging to be locked up in the penitentiary because its more comfortable than being physically free to move about based on your own free will. Black folk need to start recognizing our psychological issues, so that we can work towards healing. All of us. But, obviously too many are scarred to the point of being a nuisance to society.

Sounds like mental illness unchecked. Millions suffer from mental illnesses and it is events like these that show us that we need not take for granted the blessing of sanity. If you know someone with a mental illness, do what you can to get them help. Most often, they are the last to come to the knowledge that they have an illness. Illness is treatable with medication, therapy and compassion. And, illness is healable and people can be delivered.
I agree 100% with ‘Guest of Honor.” In most American families, regardless of culture, mental illness issues are of
the least importance. And it is so sad because America is
awash with the mentally ill. In way too many cases, we see signs in our young children and teens but choose to ignore these telling signs. In too many cases we do not know the signs of mental illness. Mental health meetings in schools, churches and community groups lead by healthcare professionals that would include Q & A, would be a good first step toward better mental
care. My heart goes out to this family– for all the family.
