Is TD Jakes Deliberately Avoiding the Word “Jesus?”

Some have accused Bishop TD Jakes of replacing the word “Jesus” with the word love in this speech given at the funeral of the late Whitney Houston.  What do you think?

    JESUS IS LOVE!!!!!

  2. FYI says:

First and Far Most – God is love in its purest form.
Before we begin to point fingers at the Bishop – lets look at the word itself – the man we called Jesus Christ was never called this by his followers , that name was created from the original african  language in order to make it more roman. The name Jesus comes from its nearest cousin  the greek word – Zeus – who was the main god in the greek culture at the time – ( think about how the Hispanic culture pronounces the  name Jesus for people with this name – Also have ever thought that in america we would never name our children Jesus other countries have no problem with it.  So if he did replace the word Jesus with the word love he would have only been  taking the name to a high degree of power.

  3. Shonie says:

Jesus is not politcally correct these days.  It is ok to say God, but when you say Jesus, you have crossed the line in most media.  This is why I love Tim Tibow. He is not ashamed to say “I thank my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ”.  As long as athletes or entertainers say “I thank God” it is ok and not controversial but when they say thank Jesus, it becomes controversial.  That’s why the Bible says to be not ashamed of the Gospel of Christ.

  4. dlynn says:

Bishop Jakes is a master storyteller, and all he is simply doing is using love as a metaphor for Jesus, and death as a metaphor for Satan.  It’s actually a very wise decision, especially when addressing unbelievers as well as people of other faiths.  He’s not there to prove a point about Christianity, he’s there to unite people who are grieving a love and death are two experiences that we can all relate to and identify with.

  5. Anonymous says:

As a pastor it is his job to point people to Jesus.

  6. J6 says:

Ok. What’s their point. Jesus is love.

  7. Vetshi says:

Exactly, instead of saying what he didn’t say the individuals need to study for their own understanding then they might understand what he was saying….

  8. Pastormw says:

Media finds things to keep people busy and divided. 1 John 4:8  says that God is love, and John 1:1 says that Jesus is God in the flesh. Bishop Jakes just spoke in a way that was fitting to believers who knew and for the Houston family. STOP trying to slander people with unfounded accusations! Attend The Potter’s House one Sunday and you’ll hear Jesus as much as you want.

  9. Jamericabiz says:

So what is the big deal?. You people are trying to make something out of nothing.Yes I said it again today, you people come up with the most stupid BS, all the time. What if he did not say jesus, do we lose something in the speech?.You people need to ask God for WISDOM KNOWLWDGE, AND UNDERSTANDING, because the lore I read what some of you are talking about I come to realise that most of you have none of the three.

  10. Charlie says:

Bishop TJ Jakes is an eloquent and poignant speaker.  Why would this medium highlight what one or maybe two people have ‘supposedly’ said? Why not highlight the comfort brought to the family?  But I do understand that it is deliberate controversy that you strategically create and fester for the purpose of surviving. And you get folk like me to comment.

  11. LAWAZIZ says:

TD Jakes is  right for not using thre “Roman name jesus” Ever since the racist movie “The passion” The true/real name of The Lord was revealed. The movie was racist because it shows “white supremecy” The people in Jerusalem were  of “Color”,all shades! The romans were of a different persuasion. This is the 21st century! “Know means Know”!
    LAWAZIZ.

  12. Tasha Brown says:

While Jesus Christ is Love, His name still needs to be mentioned. Pastor T. D. Jakes replaced the name of Jesus Christ with Love and this was a political sell out. Whitney Houston loved The Lord Jesus Christ and let everyone know it was God who she depended on. Love is wonderful and beautiful but it does not replace the name of our Lord and Savior: Jesus Christ.

  13. Mrsc4jc says:

JESUS IS LOVE.  The bible tells you that one of the greatest commandments is LOVE in the eyes and the heart of JESUS!

  14. latifah520 says:

First god is not a name. Our Heavenly Father’s name is Yahweh and his son name is Yahshua. When you call on god who are you really calling on. If someone said hey girl or man would you turn around and answer? The root of a word is the spirit of that word. People need to wake up and start research the words they are using. Because who are you praying to? There are many gods in greek myth. The god zeus is who was born on Dec. 25th. People do your RESEARCH when the time comes and you come before Yahshua you do not want to hear “I never knew you” My people perish for a lack of Knowledge. Be Blessed

  15. Pastormw says:

Tasha, don’t be fooled by the tricks of the devil. Bishop Jakes is not political in his preaching at all. Watch any of his videos, or better yet, attend his service and you will find this out for yourself, not from a divisive question. You can never separate Jesus from love, and love from Jesus. In all actuality the name Jesus is our English version of His real name.

  16. Pastormw says:

Exactly Charlie, but that’s how the devil works, and the media is one of his many tools to divide believers.

  17. Pastormw says:

It is the nature of flesh to criticize and critique others, but this is not of the Spirit. Good point, and don’t ever allow the devil to get you off track with his divisive tactics!

  18. Pastormw says:

Actually Latifah520, you are not correct either because there are no vowels in the Hebrew name for God, and it was so Holy that they were afraid to even speak it. Read II Timothy 2:23-26 to help you in the future.

  19. GiGi says:

Kudos to you, I to agree the media will always, always find something negative to report, even when there is none.  The bible says to study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

He spoke what was place on his heart, and what the family needed at that time.

  20. Fernando says:

To FYI…I bet whatever “Jesus” name is that is the name those that walked with Him called Him.  A name above all names… It does appear T.D. Jakes intentionally avoided using Jesus name which is a shame especially considering this was an opportunity to exhort the name of Jesus to the world… That trumps anything else.

  21. Mclaucd says:

JESUS IS LOVE, GET UP OFF OF THE BISHOP.

  22. Fernando says:

Actually  Pastormw you are only partially correct and Latifah520 is right on point. What you are referring to the the Hebrew name for God which Jews to this very day don’t say. The two names are not interchangeable due to the different offices in the God Head.  the name of Jesus or more accurately Yahshua is the name of God incarnate that came to pay the price for sin. Finally The Name Yahweh is a transliteration of the name YHWH for speaking purposes. The two are interchangeable and the accepted spelling by bible scholars.

  23. Truly says:

Jesus originates from Hebrew name Yeshua not African language. It means Jehovah is Salvation. Most of us don’t speak Hebrew so the translation is English. God clearly said in Exodus 20:3 “Thou shall not have no other gods before me and would NEVER choose a name for our Savior that originated from an idol god.

  24. mistie says:

I loved Bishop TD Jakes’ comments.  He said what needed to be said and I appreciated it.

  25. PRH says:

    Amen Pastormw!

  26. dlynn says:

I would also add that Jesus is neither threatened, concerned, or feeling remotely slighted because His name may go unmentioned in any environment. That’s a hang-up of man and an insecurity in believers.  He knows who He is, and Jakes knows who He is.  I pray church folks will let God be God and Christ be Christ without feeling the need to “beat” people over the head in order to validate their self-righteousness.  There’s approximately 38,000 different Christian denominations in the world. How about we focus on establishing unity of beliefs among the denominations first?

  27. dlynn says:

Was this a revival or a funeral? Christians without real power demand some kind of protocol.  A wise Christian adheres to the Apostle Paul, “…become all things to all men, that you may win some.”  1 Cor. 9:22.

  28. Leros0301 says:

I agree Mclaucd, someone has little to do. It seems today everything comes under blast and criticism, so sad.

  29. Jermaine says:

Is ‘What The Ha-Yell’  desperately trying to get readers to come to this site with foolish, sensational headlines?  That’s a more pertinent question. This accusation is ridiculous and somewhat desperate in it’s attempt to garner more readers.

  30. Fbabysister says:

I feel it was an excellent and thoughtful way to phrase words for that sad occasion.  He will make sure you remember Whitney!

  31. Fbabysister says:

    Please read Psalms 83:18.

  32. Fbabysister says:

That’s right!  Satan is the god of this system!

  33. Fbabysister says:

    And, rhese scriptures prove what?

  34. Livforjesus says:

That is the perfect time to share the LOVE of Jesus Christ and what His love  did for us.  Jesus said If I be lifted up I will draw all men you to me. I sorry but love has a name , and His name is JESUS!!

  35. Rev Powell says:

I heard that and as a pastor myself I don’t understand why he chose Love instead of Christ. I have heard the story of Christ death and ressurrection and I have never heard anyone say Love got up on the cross and love died and love was buried and love resurrected on the third day. I have and I always say Jesus or Christ. I don’t know if he sold out or what but I am disapointed that he did not use the name Jesus or Christ. I especially believe in these moments we pastors and preachers and proclaimers of the gospel must tell the world that it is Christ who will comfort them and strengthen them and I don’t think we are allowed by God to miss such significant moments especially when the enemy of God satan does not want the name Jesus the Christ to be spoken. The Bible clearly says in Acts 4:8-12 that the no other name other than Jesus Christ can we be saved. Funerals or homebgoing services are not for the deceased they are for the living they are anoobnt heropportther opportunity for people to reflect on the state of their life and ask the question what do they need to do to be saved. When Jesus Christ is proclaimed that very often will happen. Again I don’t know if he was selling out as much as trying to impress however I would have preferred if he said Jesus Christ is love.

  36. Sheila says:

GOD=  Genesis 1:26 “God said let “US” make a man in our image…….”  meaning GOD the Father – GOD the Son “JESUS” & GOD the Holy Ghost.
    GOD=  1 John 4:8 “…. God is LOVE”

Bishop Jake brought out the LOVE of GOD the Father – Son”JESUS” & The Precious Holy Ghost.

  37. Waltonsralbert91 says:

Albert Walton SR: First of all God is love! A love no man can comprehend!! Unless you have experience it. JESUS said he would never leave nor forsake us! We have the Holy spirit to guide us. Only if you can believe!!!!!!!!!

  38. Fernando says:

Although I love listening to T.D. Jakes we must tell the truth, and to Pastormw’s point of Jakes not being political, to be honest T.D. Jakes sold out years ago… I remember when George  W. Bush was pushing his agenda to invade Iraq the then president Bush had T. D Jakes all over the news co-signing for him on the need to go to war… Some political favors for having such a mega Church in Texas I guess…

  39. Astimmin says:

apparently some folk either didn’t listen too carefully or just vwant to be on a freaking soapbox because they have negative agendas themselves.  true he used love often in his remarks, but his last four words were “for god (with emphasis on the word god) is love.,
why is it that these rag publications always want to throw up negative chit and get division among the ranks of people? or get most folk expounding on chit they know little about.
if they have a problem with jakes’ remarks, then they should go to him directly and express their opinions instead of spending time at computers writing bs that rarely gets read by anyone.
god is love, love is god and we’d do well in life to be more like god in our unconditional  love for our brothers and sisters.

  40. Juma says:

What a great sermon… the substitution of Jesus for LOVE was intentional and strategical… even thou, everyone knews who was he talking about… no problem with that!

  41. Sherry333 says:

Our Creator Father says via Holy Spirit there is no other name given under Heaven for man to be saved during this dispensation of Salvation through Faith except Jesus Christ. There is a movement to remove the name Jesus Christ from witnessing ministries. The Word says that in the book of Revelations, all followers of Jesus Christ will be gathered into one & presented to our Heavenly Father, then we will look to and Worship our Heavenly Father. In the mean time, we are to honor, venerate, & worship Jesus Christ as Lord & Savior.
