AZ Lawmaker Calls for “White Appreciation Day”

Arizona is the gift that just keeps on giving. First its immigration policy took center stage, then its governor wagged
her finger in the face of the President, and now one of its lawmakers is suggesting that Arizona needs a holiday for white people.

Rep. Cecil Ash, a Republican (of course)  from Mesa, spoke on the House floor about the need for a white people’s holiday.

It all started when Rep. Richard Miranda suggested that the state adopt a Latino holiday.

After some heated exchanges, Rep. Cecil Ash took the floor.

“I’m supportive of this proposition. I just want them to assure me that when we do become in the minority you’ll have a day for us,” Ash said.

When questioned about his proposition, Ash defended his statement by saying, “Yes, I think it was appropriate. It was appropriate for the mood that was in the House and I think that if and when the Caucasian population becomes a minority, they may want to celebrate the accomplishments and the contributions of the Caucasian population the same way.”

It would seem that we already have white appreciation day because, in all honesty, what day isn’t a good day to be white and appreciated?

You’d have to make the year 367 days long and add that on to the other 366 white appreciation days in 2012.

    4th of July.

the objective of white history month would be what….national unity? a show of white pride? a protest against black hisory month? What would be the desired goal……did I miss that?

If you think this little display of humility and historical perspective is racist, please avoid white chocolate, black magic, blacktop, and Henry Ford who said you could buy his car in any color, as long as it was black.

Come one, folks.  If everything is blown out of proportion, eventually nothing will have any meaning.  Like the path of sexual harassment where now just complimenting a woman can get you in trouble.

How about we all “lighten up” (and no, that’s not a reference to skin whitening)?  How about a little perspective?

There already is one, every month except February! Its not enough that they own the mass media, make all the laws, and have all the country’s wealth, but know they want a month to celebrate that! This guy is an idiot!!! Would killing the Native Americans and slavery be two of the accomplishments they would be celebrating?

  6. Fifty years ago white folk owned, everything in america, and most of the rest of the important stuff in the world. Today they own 95- 96% of everything and they are felling sorry for theselves. I’am going to try and help them feel better, the father of the country was white, founding fathers were white, the slave owners where white, the folks who kill the Indian and put them on resavation where white. You made car, train, ships, tall bulding, atom bombs, and just for the hell of it you had two wars in my liftetime viet nam, and iraq that was not necessary. You made and left creole and malottoes in my community(I’am not mad) All of the holidays except MLK or promote white culture. You have a white god, that bless america all the time, and before some black folks get mad remember every picture of his son I saw growing up was white. now white folk, yall feel better already.

The article said absolutely nothing about a month, nor about “White Appreciation Day” as the title wrongly claims, thus proving that an inaccurate headline trumps the details in even a short article.

Ash was merely spinning the tables of history and pointing out that some day whites may be in the minority, and therefore — based on the call for a Latino holiday, perhaps turnabout would be fair play.

  8. Turnabout will never be fair play because other cultures don’t celebrate their history to spite white people. There, is your difference. Even if Whites became the minority in numbers, they will never be a minority in power. Who owns the wealth in this country? Yeah, have a seat _

  9. Miss, EVERYONE who becomes a minority in numbers loses power. The Native Americans had more power than the Colonials; not their descendants live on barren strips of land drinking themselves to death.

Lol!   You summed it up rather nicely!  Lol!
I was taken aback when an elderly white gentleman
asked me,’ when would there be a celebration for
white history as there is for Black History month?” I had to stop and think of all their contributions to American
    History!  I paused…… as not to go there…..I smiled…
    I said that I don’t know!
How about this one:  when I hear any Candidate say,
We’re going to take back our Country!  Huh???…….. The Native Americans Are probably wanting the same thing!( ”Go Home””)

This “us” “them” crap is nauseating.  Blacks who read articles/websites like this hate whites.  (I’m black and I’m disgusted by the racism I read on these pages). And as you can see I don’t hate whites.

  12. Leslie Stivers says:

C’mon, really?  Where would you be?

Smiling is not a sign of racism. To quote Angela Davis,  ”Racism is not a MAN, it is a system.”
I maintain that the 4th of July, Lincoln’s birthday, Thanksgiving Day, Saint Patrick’s Day, All Saints’ Day, are all “white appreciation day”.  I never said the idea was wrong, either.

You do, of course, realize that Barack Obama wanted to “take back our country” long before the Tea Party came into existence, right?  In fact, he was the keynote speaker in both 2006 and 2007 at a national conference by that term, used to attack George W. Bush.  Among the attendees were Van Jones, Maxine Waters and Al Sharpton.

  17. Leslie Stivers says:

okay, so there are days when we Americans celebrate people who are white (not because they are white or to stay that their whiteness is what makes them important to our culture).  This is different, though, than saying it’s a “white appreciation day” in the same vane as this article suggests or criticizes.  And All Saint’s Day?  Please explain that one if you wish to continue this little discussion.  :)

  18. Leslie Stivers says:

No…there wouldn’t have been states, presidents, Lincoln, etc.  There wouldn’t have been said Emancipation Proclamation.  Slavery would have likely continued in the COLONIES of a KING unless abolition reached our shores too b/c of the fight in England.  The answer:  Without the War for Independence, the Declaration, we would still be English colony. This is not a white day, this is an American day.

  19. Anonymous says:

That was my point.  You asked where I would be.  In other words, I would be without emancipation.  See?  You really could loosen up a bit.  My comments are not attacks.

  20. Leslie Stivers says:

You do realize our founding fathers were white because they were [mostly] English, right?  Is it less than to be English/white?  Is it inherently bad to be white?  Was George Washington an evil man because he owned slaves?  Are you seriously going to make that call (do you own anything from Walmart??)

And, ironically, you forgot to mention all the accomplishments of black Americans.  Did blacks not contribute to America as we know it?  Why does it always have to be us/them?  What is white culture?  If you mean American, than, yes, ALL of our holidays celebrate our history:  white, black, yellow, etc.  MLK is just as much a white person’s cause to celebrate as a black’s.  And be careful not to offend the brilliant Dr. with your response to this; I think he’d agree with me.   It seems to me we need to define our terms; a healthy understanding of race, ethnicity, and culture would rid a lot of people of these notions (i.e. this article).

Rep. Ash asked for a day to show appreciation for the accomplishments of Caucasian Americans. I am responding to what the Rep said, as well as the article. What’s wrong with 4th of July?
All Saints’ Day is a Catholic Holiday (Nov. 1) to celebrate all of the saints.
We can get rids of bigotry if we loosen up, and even agree with some of things which at first appear outlandish. I think Ash spoke out of a perceived fear (black people will make us slaves, too!!!).

  22. Leslie Stivers says:

I know what All Saint’s Day is, we celebrate it as a family (we’re not Catholic, but Christians).  My comments stand about the holy-days.

I think Ash was making a point–it seems he doesn’t like the separation that has developed in people’s mind over the appreciation of races, instead of the unifying celebration of American culture–with all of its ills.  It’s okay to celebrate individuals who do something significant (i.e. MLK), but to celebrate an entire race within a country of many races, seems to do the very thing we all hate.

Nice talking to you, I’m out.

Thank you for that note.  Still, the article says absolutely nothing about a month of anything.  “Holiday” and “day” were mentioned, the word “month” is not in the article.

  27. TheSeKondElement says:

The title is definitely fraudulent. However, I don’t believe there will ever be a time, even if whites become the minority, that we’ll need to make a special effort to appreciate their accomplishments. That’s what we have Monday through Sunday for already.

  28. Johnson Luciana says:

This asshole got shit all fucked up. We arent just celebrating just our accomplishment. We are celebrating the strength and endurence a millions who were beat hung and dehuminized as a people just because.

  29. marie says:

@satrap When there’s little mentionof whites in the history books then that’ll be about the time to have a white history day/month.

Like duh … yeah, you get a ‘white appreciation holiday.” The other 364 days of the year.
