Some stories are just so jaw-dropping that you don’t believe it unless you see it — luckily, we have video.
Paramedics in Mexico City are under intense fire after video surfaced of them dropping a donor heart on the pavement.
In their defense, they were rushing to get the organ to a patient who was waiting to receive it in Mexico City. The 280-mile journey from Guanajuato state to the capital was followed by the nation’s media, and viewers watched with baited breath to see if the heart would make it in time for the life-saving operation. After they departed the helicopter they immediately starting running to the private jet, when one of the paramedics tripped over the wheeled container holding the heart. The top flew open and the organ, wrapped in a polyethylene bag, tumbled onto the street.
The heart was recovered and continued on to Mexico City; the Mexico Department of Health confirmed that the heart reached the hospital, and according to the Associated Press, the surgery was successful.
