Mel Gibson is now officially divorced. He is also half the man he used to be, at least financially. Gibson’s wife of 30 years, Robyn, has taken his seven children and half of his fortune. Gibson’s fortune has been estimated to be worth $850 million and this represents the largest divorce payout in Hollywood history.
The couple didn’t have a prenuptial agreement, so the actor’s ex-wife is legally entitled to half of everything he’s earned during his career. Gibson’s assets included over $600 million grossed by The Passion of the Christ, another $100 million real estate holdings, and $75 million for film and TV projects he’s executive produced. Gibson even bought an island in Fiji for $15 million.
Two homes have already been transferred to Robyn, worth a combined total of $22.5 million. She is also legally entitled to half of every royalty check Gibson earns for the rest of his life.
“I left my wife because we had no spiritual common ground,” Gibson told his then-girlfriend Oksana Grigorieva in a secretly recorded tape released to the public.
Gibson later entered into a nasty custody battle with Grigorieva, in which she accused him of domestic violence.
