Lose-A-Pound, Gain-A-Deal? Man Gains Early Prison Release For Losing Weight

Lose-A-Pound, Gain-A-Deal? Man Gains Early Prison Release For Losing Weight

What the Hayell reports:

George McCovery, 37, was 345 lbs when he was locked in a Lake County, Florida prison for a suspended license charge.

He is now 20 lbs lighter after participating in Judge Donna Miller’s lose-a-pound, gain-a-deal program — an innovative concept that exchanges personal self-improvement for shorter prison sentences. For prisoners that are not violent or repeat offenders, the unique judge orders them to start jogging, walking, taking dance classes, among other things, according to the Orlando Sentinel.

McCovery dropped over one pound per day,and was released from prison 9 days early.

Judge Miller’s, whose been a judge for 17 years, courtroom proceeding are broadcast on the TV show “Lake Courts” and she assures critics that only certain people are granted the opportunity of early release.

“I do what I do to try to change the person in front of me,” she said, “If the person needs jail, they get jail.”

One pound per week is considered acceptable, healthy weight loss, and Miller expressed surprise that McCovery had lost so much weight in such a short period of time,

“It’s not easy to lose weight,” Miller told the Sentinel. “I thought he’d lose 5, maybe, 6 pounds — not 25.”

Judge Miller signed McCovery’s releases order with a proud, “Good job, Mr. McCovery!”
