Radio show host Jimmy Lakey probably won’t win many African American friends after he compared First Lady Michelle Obama to Chewbacca, the ape-like, hairy creature from the film, “Star Wars.” Lakey claims that he heard the comparison while relaxing in a cigar club recently.
Lakey, who hosts a show on 740 KVOR in Colorado Springs, said, “at the cigar club, someone used the phrase Chewbacca, and everyone knew or assumed who this person was talking about. I’ve tested it. I’ve done group testing, and I’ve said, if I say Chewbacca, what do you think? And, I’m telling you, I’m in so much trouble right now.”
Lakey critiqued himself by saying that he thought that the comparison was a bit much, and then noted that he’d shown pictures of Mrs. Obama to his wife. He claims that his wife said that Michelle wears outfits that make her “look like a halfback.”
“If you’re the First Lady, you shouldn’t wear things that make you look like a halfback,” Lakey claims his wife said.
Lakey then said that he told his wife, “What’s the difference between you saying she looks like a halfback and someone else saying the name Chewbacca? I don’t get the difference.”
Think Lakey’s a racist? Well, consider this: When someone called into the show saying that Michelle Obama reminded him of a character from Planet of Apes, Lakey thought it was incredibly funny.

What he said about a beautiful black sister is wrong. But the way you get rid of stuff like this is check ourselves. For every negative there should be at least 2 positive. Meaning we need to create positivity amongst ourselves. Create radio shows where we are enlightening ourselves, educating ourselves, learning our history. But to get rid of somebody like that yes you can picket boycott write petitions. But for something like this it takes knowledge and respect for ourselves to be spread. Don’t get me wrong im not saying to not stand up for something like this. Even when the guy Imus made his statement about the black female basketball players how many white people talk like that about blacks to me that sound like he heard that from somebody black to me. they don’t use those type of words to descibe blacks in a negative way they use others.
I will repeat myself again. As a proud Black woman who along with my late husband have raised two upstanding black males and now have three beautiful grand daughters I couldn’t agree with you more; for this reason, I spend an inordinant amount of my time working in the community with young people who might not get this same sound upbringing teaching racial pride. This way, hopefully the next generation of people of color will recognize the harm they do themselves with such derogatory language. However, at the same time we must continue to address that which needs to be addressed.
