Nik, so first let me say- I am a college student, double majoring at a university that I will not mention in a city that I will also not mention because I have quickly noticed this is a national/world wide issue. I also work in a bar on the weekends doing bottle service and I am used to drunk guys hitting on me all night long so it is not like I am overly sensitive to this issue. men covet will also dwindle. These advantages black men covet include their

I am usually an impartial observer, but i have witnessed this myself. When a person buys into stereotypes they set themselves up for disapointment. My dad is a 6 foot 8 chocolate black man, but he prefers black women. Most of the black men in my family are this prototype. To this day I see women of other races automatically expect that a member of my family is attracted to them, and some of them get shocked (even angry) when this is not the case. I am glad that someone wrote a letter about this so that a discussion of this situation can be generated. To blame this ignorant woman for the failures of her forefathers is to forget
that Africa itself sold its own people into slavery as well. I do not condone
slavery, I do not condone hatred. But to deny the fact that there were many of
your own people sold is like denying the fact that many of my people had been sold
to white people by the tribes themselves.
White traders did not
need to savagely kill entire tribes in order to exact their tribute in slaves.
All they needed to do is bring goods that appealed to the kings of those
tribes. The kings would gladly sell their own subjects. (Of course, this
neither condones the white traders who bought the slaves nor deny that many
white traders still committed atrocities to maximize their business).
This does not mean that
western slave traders were justified in what they did, but placing all the
blame on them is a way to absolve all the others.
Also, it is worth noting
that the death rate among the white crews of the slave ships (20-25%) was
higher than the rate among black slaves (15%) because slaves were more valuable
than sailors but nobody has written books and filmed epics about those sailors
(often unwillingly enrolled or even kidnapped in ports around Europe when they
were drunk).
To this day, too many Africans, Arabs and Europeans believe that the African
slave trade was an USA aberration, not their own invention.
By the time the slave
trade was abolished in the West, there were many more slaves in Africa (black
slaves of black owners) than in the Americas.
First
Nations routinely captured slaves from neighbouring tribes. Slave-owning tribes
of the fishing societies, such as the Yurok and Haida lived
along the coast from what is now Alaska to California. Fierce
warrior indigenous slave-traders of the Pacific Northwest
Coast raided as far as California. Slavery was hereditary, the slaves
being prisoners of war and their descendants.
Among Pacific Northwest tribes about a quarter of the population were slaves.
The
citizens of New France received slaves as gifts from their allies among First
Nations peoples. Slaves were prisoners taken in raids against the villages of
the Fox nation,
a tribe that was an ancient rival of the Miami people and
their Algonquian allies. Native slaves were
much easier to obtain and thus more numerous than African slaves in New France,
but were less valued. The average native slave died at 18, and the average
African slave died at 25 (the average European could expect to live until
the age of 35). 1790, the abolition
movement was gaining credence in Canada and the ill intent of
slavery was evidenced by an incident involving a slave woman being violently
abused by her slave owner on her way to being sold in the United States. The Act Against Slavery of 1793 legislated the
gradual abolition of slavery: no slaves could be imported; slaves already in
the province would remain enslaved until death, no new slaves could be brought
into Upper Canada, and children born to female
slaves would be slaves but must be freed at age 25. The Act remained in

abolished slavery in all parts of the British

Although some of what you have written is somewhat true, but it is misleading. Numbers out of context Can be very misleading. For example, the white crew members on the slave ships did in no way equal the number of African slaves; 10 out of 20 white crew members dying equates to 50%, but 500 out of 5000 African slaves equates to 10% (which by the percentages looks as if more white crew members died), but the totality of deaths for the African slaves greatly outnumber the number of white crew members. Remember MILLIONS of Africans were taken forcibly as slaves compared to a much smaller number of white crew men. And, also keep in mind that the Africans who survived were treated much worse than the surviving white crew members.
In addition, slavery in African cultures was generally more like indentured servitude. Slaves were not meant to be chattel of other men, nor enslaved for life. African slaves were paid wages and were able to accumulate property. They often bought their own freedom and could then achieve social promotion, just as freedman in ancient Rome. Some, such as Jaja of Opobo and Sunni Ali Ber even rose to the status of kings. These differences between slavery and traditional indentured servitude were used by Western slave owners during the time of abolition in an attempt to thwart their slaves efforts to free themselves, for example by John Wedderburn in Wedderburn v. Knight, the case that ended legal recognition of slavery in Scotland in 1776. Regardless of the legal options open to slave owners, rational cost-earning calculations and voluntary adoption of moral restraints often mitigated the more vicious uses of slaves throughout history. I understand you wanting to enlighten people on the subject of slavery, but please don’t trivialize the pain, abuse, denigration and demoralization of the African slaves in Western Culture that is still at the root of many ills of African-Americans in society today. I did not only mention Africa, but my own people; we were all slaves to the white oppressors of our ancestors days, yet now many of us (like my grandfather) are slaves to the past when white men took everything from us. We lost our ancestral lands and people, but we should be able to move past this hatred and blame, the children of today did not enslave our people, why must we force them to carry these as if it is their fault?

By virtue of your color you are afforded opportunities that we must still fight to get. The effects of slavery on your life can in no way compare to the effects on an African or African-American.

Nobody takes a black man from anybody, white or black, he freely chooses to give himself up (your words ring of slave mentality).
